Overview of Breast Cancer Surgery Options:
- Lumpectomy (Breast-Conserving Surgery):
- Removes tumor and a small portion of surrounding tissue.
- Preserves most of the breast.
- Typically for early-stage cancer.
- Mastectomy:
- Total (Simple) Mastectomy:
- Removes the breast without lymph nodes or chest muscles.
- Modified Radical Mastectomy:
- Removes the breast and some underarm lymph nodes.
- Radical Mastectomy:
- Rarely used, removes breast, chest muscles, and underarm lymph nodes.
- Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB):
- Removes a few lymph nodes to check for cancer spread without extensive removal.
- Axillary Lymph Node Dissection (ALND):
- Removes more underarm lymph nodes if cancer has spread or SLNB isn't feasible.
- Breast Reconstruction:
- Rebuilds the breast after mastectomy.
- Utilizes implants or tissue from other body parts.
